John David Crow Named Gridiron Legend

★ posted on December 30, 2011

The Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas Committee announced that legendary Texas A&M running back John David Crow has been added to the 2011 class of Gridiron Legends presented by Wrangler Jeans and Cavender’s Boot City.

The 2011 Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas will feature Texas A&M and Northwestern, and will kick off at 11:00 a.m. CST Saturday, December 31. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN and broadcast on ESPN Radio. It will also be heard in the Houston area on ESPN 97.5FM.

More than 60,000 tickets have already been sold for the Bowl, leaving fewer than 10,000 seats available. Fans may purchase tickets for the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas online at http://www.ticketmaster.com or on the phone at 832-667-2390. Ticket prices range from $30-110.

Crow won the Heisman Trophy as college football’s most outstanding player in 1957 as a star running back and defensive back at Texas A&M University. The Louisiana native starred on an Aggie team that reached as high as number one in the polls, and despite playing in only seven games due to injury, still managed to rush for 562 yards and six touchdowns, pass for five touchdowns, catch a pair of passes and intercept five passes on defense. His play was so remarkable that Bear Bryant, Crow’s head coach at A&M, remarked, “If he doesn’t win the Heisman, they ought to stop giving it out.”

Crow went on to a stellar career in the National Football League, appearing in four Pro Bowls for the Cardinals, first in Chicago and then in St. Louis. He was selected to the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 1960’s. Crow returned to College Station as an assistant athletic director at Texas A&M in 1983 and took over as athletic director from 1988-93.

Crow joins Houston Texans owner Bob McNair, former Houston Oilers head coach Bum Phillips, former Oilers quarterback Dan Pastorini, former Oklahoma and Port Arthur running back Joe Washington and former Katy High School head coach Mike Johnston in the Gridiron Legends Class of 2011.

The Gridiron Legends presented by Wrangler Jeans and Cavender’s Boot City are all individuals who made a significant contribution to the game of football in the state of Texas, either at the high school, collegiate or professional level.
